EXPERIMENTAL (X) COURSES

Experimental Courses

  • should only be proposed if Selected Advanced Topics (470) courses cannot be used and if the course offering is truly experimental in nature and may not become a permanent course. All other new courses should be proposed via Continuous Course review or for the next Cal Poly catalog.
  • are not included in the Cal Poly Catalog.
  • are valid for a maximum of two years (to continue to teach the course beyond two years, propose the X course as a New Course).
  • have the same due dates as courses proposed during Continuous Review

Academic Senate resolution AS-503-98/CC stated that faculty should propose a course as experimental only “in compelling circumstances.” It also stated that the Academic Senate Curriculum Committee would review proposals for experimental courses.

Proposal and Review Processes for Experimental (x) Courses:
  • Forward the proposal to the department head/chair, who then forwards the proposal to the college dean. The college may require review by the college curriculum committee or the committee chair..
  • College dean forwards the proposal to the Academic Programs Office. The proposal will also be reviewed by the Chair of the Academic Senate Curriculum Committee.
  •  Approved course proposals are forwarded to Class Scheduling.
