ULOs and DLOs: Campus-wide Assessment Efforts
Campus-wide assessment efforts this year will focus on the Cal Poly University Learning Objectives (ULOs) and the Diversity Learning Objectives (DLOs).
Academic Program Review
During the academic program review (APR) process, faculty will consider the “typical student’s” path through the major, GE, and learning experiences outside the classroom. By aligning the ULOs and DLOs to learning objectives in the major, GE, and out-of-class experiences, programs can assess whether their students are achieving the ULOs. The Library and the Student Affairs Division will also align the ULOs and DLOs with the learning objectives in their respective programs.
Integrated Program Review
A pilot integrated program review (IPR) process debuts this year. Several undergraduate professional programs in OCOB and CENG will participate, as will Construction Management and some areas of General Education. This review will examine learning outcome data from both GE and the major in order to better understand skill development across those two areas.
Student Learning Consultants
The General Education program is leading an innovative assessment effort focused on the following ULOs and DLOs:
Navjit Brar
Brenda Helmbrecht
Dan Villegas
- Engage in lifelong learning (led by Navjit Brar, Library, Student Learning Consultant)
- Writing Proficiency (led by Brenda Helmbrecht, English, Student Learning Consultant)
- Diversity and Global Understanding (Dan Villegas, Economics, Student Learning Consultant).
In each area, the student learning consultant along with a committee of faculty and staff will develop a rubric, identify an artifact, collect assessment data, and review it, all during this academic year.
Committees are currently being formed. We are seeking faculty and staff with teaching experience and/or assessment experience in these areas. Contact Doug Keesey.
Tying it All Together
In the spring, the group of faculty and staff working on the WASC self-study theme “Integration and Student Learning” (ISL) will build on these assessment efforts to develop an institutional portrait of what we are doing to promote achievement of the ULOs and DULOs and how well we are doing it.
In advance, we would like to thank (TNK) the many people across campus participating in assessment and program review activities!
-Cheryl Ney, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs
