Kelly Carlile, Child Development Major, on Sydney Harbour Bridge, Australia
Carlile attended the University of New South Wales July-November 2007
Today, there is consensus that globally fluent graduates are essential to American competitiveness. International exposure, whether study, volunteer work, or internship, has become a must-have credential. The Study Abroad Office has partnered with five program providers to expand the options for overseas sites and language immersion programs.
Students enrolled in affiliated programs can enroll in summer, semester, trimester, short courses, or academic year-long programs with the following organizations:
- AustraLearn/AsiaLearn
- Cultural Experiences Abroad
- Danish Institute for Study Abroad
- Foundation for International Education
- University Studies Abroad Consortium.
Some of the newest program sites are China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Poland, Russia and Singapore. Students typically take GE-related courses applied toward Areas C and D. Students enrolled directly in the overseas partner universities can also find major/support or minor-compatible courses, including engineering on the French Riviera or business and tourism management in India. The affiliate partner programs also help students find internships, field studies, and community volunteer opportunities. Students are strongly encouraged to get their courses pre-approved for transfer credit toward their major, minor or General Education.
Kelly Carlile, a Child Development Major who attended the University of New South Wales, describes her experience this way: "The opportunity to study abroad is one that may only come once in a lifetime. My experiences not only allowed me to become more independent, but also forced me to adapt to a foreign environment and try new things. I have formed friendships that will last a lifetime and memories that I will carry forever. The study abroad program at my host university made the transition comfortable and offered various activities for overseas students. I would suggest to any student considering studying abroad to go without thinking twice!"
Eligible students can take advantage of grants and scholarships. For further information, please contact Monica Schechter, Associate Director of International Education and Programs (756-5964).
